JUBA — Five soldiers from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) were killed early Sunday after unknown gunmen attacked a military base in Upper Nile State, authorities said.

The attack targeted an SSPDF Division 2 (Agwelek) position in Papuojo Boma, Tonga Payam, in Panyikang County, at around 5:30 a.m. local time, according to Upper Nile State Information Minister Peter Ngwojo Akwiny.

Officials said the assailants fled the scene in the direction of neighbouring Jonglei State following the assault. Security forces have launched investigations to establish the identity and motive of the attackers.

Authorities have suggested that the attackers could be linked to the SPLA-IO, although no independent verification has been provided.

The Upper Nile State government condemned the attack and called for calm, urging all armed groups to refrain from actions that could undermine peace efforts as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.

The SSPDF said it has reinforced security in the area in an effort to stabilize the region and ensure civilians can continue their daily activities without disruption.

South Sudan has experienced recurring clashes between government forces and opposition-linked groups, particularly in Upper Nile and Jonglei states, where security remains fragile despite ongoing peace agreements.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details on the identities of the attackers or possible arrests.
