Iraq to Announce New Political and Economic Partnership with US, Prime Minister Says

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has announced that Iraq will unveil a new framework for political cooperation and economic partnership with the United States, according to a statement from his office.

The planned partnership is expected to strengthen relations between Baghdad and Washington, focusing on areas such as economic development, investment, trade, energy cooperation and political coordination.

Al-Zaidi said the agreement would reflect Iraq’s efforts to build balanced international partnerships that support national interests, economic growth and regional stability.

The announcement comes as Iraq continues to seek stronger economic ties with global partners while navigating complex regional dynamics and maintaining relationships with both Western and neighboring countries.

The United States and Iraq have maintained a strategic partnership covering security cooperation, economic development and diplomatic engagement since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003. In recent years, discussions between the two countries have increasingly focused on shifting relations from a primarily security-based partnership toward broader economic and institutional cooperation.

Officials said further details of the new partnership, including specific agreements and areas of cooperation, will be announced in the coming period.
