KHARTOUM — Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, held talks with African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson’s Special Representative for Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, on efforts to advance peace and support a political solution to the country’s ongoing crisis.

The meeting focused on the latest political and security developments in Sudan, AU-led mediation efforts and ways to support an inclusive Sudanese-led process aimed at restoring stability and constitutional governance.

The two sides also discussed the reopening of the African Union’s liaison office in Khartoum, which has remained closed since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. The reopening is expected to strengthen the AU’s engagement, facilitate dialogue and support peacebuilding efforts in Sudan.

Ambassador Belaiche conveyed the AU’s commitment to continued engagement with Sudanese stakeholders and efforts to promote a comprehensive political settlement that addresses the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

The talks come as regional and international actors continue diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has caused a major humanitarian and security crisis across the country.

Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohieddine Salem, also attended the meeting.
