DOHA — Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the father of the country’s current ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has died, the Emir’s Palace announced. Qatar entered a period of mourning following the death of a leader widely regarded as a key figure in the country’s transformation into a major regional and international player.
Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, oversaw a period of unprecedented economic growth and political expansion during his 18-year reign. His leadership marked a turning point in Qatar’s modern history, as the Gulf state increased its global influence through energy development, diplomacy and strategic investments.
During his rule, Qatar became one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas and invested heavily in infrastructure, education, technology and national development projects. His government also supported the creation of major institutions that strengthened Qatar’s international presence.
Sheikh Hamad was closely associated with the establishment of Al Jazeera in 1996, which grew into one of the most influential media networks in the Arab world and became a major factor in Qatar’s regional and global visibility.
In foreign policy, Sheikh Hamad positioned Qatar as an active diplomatic player, promoting dialogue and mediation efforts in regional and international disputes. During his leadership, Qatar also secured the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a landmark achievement that brought worldwide attention to the country.
In 2013, Sheikh Hamad peacefully transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a rare transition of leadership within Gulf monarchies. He remained a respected figure in Qatar and continued to be regarded as an important symbol of the country’s modern development.
Political analysts have described Sheikh Hamad as one of the most influential leaders in Qatar’s history, crediting him with transforming the nation from a small Gulf state into a country with significant economic, diplomatic and strategic influence.
Horn Africa News (HAN) extends its deepest condolences to the Qatari royal family, the government and the people of Qatar following the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
