Somalia, Spain Agree to Fund Social Projects Through Debt Relief

MADRID — Somalia and Spain have signed a landmark bilateral agreement in Madrid that will convert part of Somalia’s debt obligations into funding for social services and development projects, in a move aimed at accelerating economic growth and supporting the country’s long-term development goals.

The debt-conversion initiative will redirect funds that would have been used for debt repayments toward key sectors including education, healthcare, water and sanitation, infrastructure, and community development. The program is expected to improve access to essential services, create jobs, and enhance living standards for communities across Somalia.

Somali officials hailed the agreement as a major milestone in the country’s economic recovery and reform agenda. They noted that the initiative complements Somalia’s recent achievements in securing international debt relief and reflects growing confidence among international partners in the country’s economic management.

Spain reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s development and state-building efforts, emphasizing the importance of investing in human capital, public services, and resilience-building programs. Spanish officials said the agreement demonstrates the strong partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to sustainable development and poverty reduction.

The agreement is expected to contribute to Somalia’s progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as quality education, healthcare, clean water access, and inclusive economic growth. Analysts say debt-for-development arrangements can provide countries with additional fiscal space to invest in critical public services while easing financial burdens.

Both governments pledged to ensure effective implementation of the initiative through transparent and accountable mechanisms. The projects funded under the agreement are expected to support Somalia’s national development priorities while further strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Mogadishu and Madrid.

The signing of the agreement highlights increasing international support for Somalia’s economic transformation and underscores efforts to build a more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable future for its citizens.
