Türkiye Approves $30 Million Grant for Somalia to Support Budget and Institution Building

ANKARA — Türkiye has approved a new $30 million non-repayable grant agreement for Somalia, providing fresh budget support as the two countries continue to strengthen their economic, political, and strategic partnership.

The agreement, approved by the Turkish government, will provide Somalia with financial assistance aimed at supporting public budget needs and strengthening government institutions. The funding is structured as a grant, meaning Somalia will not be required to repay the money.

According to the agreement, the funds will be transferred in installments, with monthly payments of up to $2.5 million. The financial support will be managed through official channels and will require reporting mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of the funds.

The grant comes as Somalia continues efforts to rebuild state institutions, improve public financial management, and expand government services following major economic reforms and international debt relief achievements. Somalia reached the completion point of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative in 2023, securing significant debt relief and creating opportunities for increased investment and development support.

Somali officials are expected to use the additional budget support to strengthen government operations, improve institutional capacity, and support ongoing national priorities, including security, public administration, and economic development programs.

The agreement further highlights the deepening relationship between Türkiye and Somalia, which has expanded beyond financial assistance to include cooperation in defence, infrastructure, trade, energy, and humanitarian support.

Türkiye has become one of Somalia’s closest international partners over the past decade, providing development assistance and supporting projects aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, and government capacity.

Analysts say the latest grant reflects Ankara’s continued commitment to Somalia’s stability and development while strengthening Türkiye’s strategic engagement in the Horn of Africa.

The funding agreement marks another step in bilateral cooperation between the two countries, with both governments emphasizing the importance of long-term partnership and sustainable development.
