MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Federal Council of Ministers has approved the African Youth Charter, a move the government says will strengthen youth empowerment, expand employment opportunities and increase young people’s participation in national leadership and development.
The government said the decision aligns Somalia with the African Union’s youth policy framework, promoting the rights, inclusion and socio-economic development of young people across the continent.
Officials said the charter will help create more opportunities for Somali youth through employment, education, entrepreneurship and leadership initiatives, while expanding access to African Union scholarships, vocational training and exchange programs.
The framework also aims to increase youth participation in political decision-making, public administration and state-building, recognizing young people as key drivers of Somalia’s long-term peace and development.
The Federal Government said the ratification reflects its commitment to investing in the country’s youth, describing them as the backbone of Somalia’s future and pledging continued support for policies that place young people at the center of national reconstruction and economic growth.
