ADDIS ABABA — Israel has expressed support for Ethiopia’s efforts to secure reliable and mutually beneficial access to the sea, saying the initiative could contribute to Ethiopia’s economic development and strengthen regional connectivity.
Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia Abreham Nigusse (PhD) told Gazette Plus that Israel supports Ethiopia’s pursuit of maritime access through peaceful and diplomatic means.
“The Israeli government policy on achieving Ethiopia’s access to the sea is very clear,” Ambassador Abreham said. “The Israeli government is supporting and stands behind Ethiopia on its efforts to achieve access to the sea through peaceful and diplomatic means.”
Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most populous countries, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dependable access to international maritime trade routes as it seeks to expand exports, attract investment, support industrialization and create jobs.
The Ethiopian government has said its maritime ambitions should be pursued through dialogue, diplomacy and arrangements that respect the interests of all parties.
Economic Development and Maritime Access
Ambassador Abreham also highlighted Ethiopia’s broader efforts to turn its natural and human resources into economic opportunities.
He pointed to the country’s agricultural land, water resources, natural assets and large labor force, arguing that effective use of these resources could help reduce poverty and improve livelihoods.
For Ethiopia, maritime connectivity is viewed as part of this wider economic strategy. Improved access to international shipping routes could facilitate imports and exports, enhance business competitiveness, attract foreign investment and strengthen Ethiopia’s links with regional and global markets.
It could also create opportunities in sectors including manufacturing, logistics, tourism and international trade.
Israel Emphasizes Diplomacy
The Israeli ambassador stressed that his government’s position is centered on peaceful engagement and diplomacy.
He also clarified that, while Israel supports Ethiopia’s maritime aspirations, he was not aware of any specific request from Addis Ababa for practical assistance.
“So far, according to my knowledge, I don’t see any specific requests from the Ethiopian government,” he said.
The remarks come as Ethiopia continues diplomatic engagement with regional partners over its maritime interests.
For Addis Ababa, the issue extends beyond physical access to the sea. Ethiopia views maritime connectivity as a potential driver of trade, investment, industrial development, employment and regional economic integration.
Israel’s stated support adds another diplomatic voice to Ethiopia’s call for a peaceful and mutually beneficial framework for maritime access, while the issue remains closely watched across the Horn of Africa and the wider region.
