MOGADISHU — Somalia has launched a $25 million Pandemic Fund project aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to detect, prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks, according to the Ministry of Health.

The initiative will focus on improving disease surveillance systems, laboratory capacity and the skills of health workers across the country. The project is expected to strengthen Somalia’s ability to identify emerging health threats at an early stage and respond more effectively to epidemics and other public health emergencies.

The Health Ministry said the programme will support the expansion and improvement of disease monitoring networks, enabling health authorities to collect, analyse and share information more quickly when suspected outbreaks occur.

The project will also invest in laboratory infrastructure and diagnostic capacity, helping health facilities conduct testing and confirm diseases more efficiently. Strengthening laboratories is considered a key component of Somalia’s efforts to improve outbreak detection and reduce delays in responding to infectious diseases.

Another major component will be the development of Somalia’s health workforce. Health professionals are expected to receive training and technical support in areas including disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, laboratory diagnostics and emergency preparedness.

The project is designed to strengthen coordination between national and regional health authorities, laboratories and other institutions involved in public health emergencies.

Somalia remains vulnerable to outbreaks because of its fragile health infrastructure, limited access to healthcare in some areas and recurring humanitarian emergencies. Strengthening surveillance and laboratory systems could help authorities respond more quickly to diseases before they spread widely.

The Pandemic Fund, established as a multilateral financing mechanism, supports countries in strengthening pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Somalia’s project is expected to contribute to longer-term efforts to build a more resilient national health system.

The Health Ministry said the investment represents an important step toward improving Somalia’s preparedness for future epidemics and protecting communities from infectious disease threats.
