GENEVA— Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been invited by UEFA to attend the 2026 Men’s Referee Summer Course in Geneva, Switzerland, in another significant milestone in his international refereeing career.

The UEFA course is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 2, 2026, bringing together referees involved in UEFA’s officiating programme for technical sessions, fitness assessments, match analysis and preparations for the upcoming European football season.

Artan’s invitation comes shortly after his historic appointment to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, where he became the first non-European referee to take charge of the prestigious fixture.

His selection for the UEFA course has further strengthened speculation that European football’s governing body is considering giving him opportunities to officiate matches in European competitions.

The invitation was formally communicated to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Somalia Football Federation, reflecting the growing international recognition of Artan’s performances and status as one of Africa’s leading referees.

Artan has steadily built a reputation on the international stage. In 2025, he was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, becoming one of the most prominent Somali officials in international football.

His rise has also attracted attention because of the wider significance of his appointments for Somali football. His involvement in major international competitions has placed Somalia among the countries represented at the highest levels of football officiating.

The UEFA summer course is expected to provide Artan with an opportunity to work alongside some of Europe’s leading referees and UEFA technical officials. Participation in such programmes is an important part of the preparation and assessment process for referees involved in UEFA competitions.

Artan’s continued involvement in UEFA activities could potentially open the door to further appointments in European competitions, although any future match assignments would depend on UEFA’s official selection and appointment procedures.

For Somali football, his progress represents a major achievement and provides increased international visibility for the country’s refereeing programme.

Artan’s invitation to Geneva therefore marks another important step in his career, following his historic UEFA Super Cup appointment and his recognition by CAF as one of Africa’s top referees.
