MOGADISHU — Former Somali Presidents Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo are reportedly holding a meeting in Mogadishu to discuss the country’s political situation and upcoming talks between opposition leaders and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
According to reports circulating on Thursday, Farmaajo visited Sheikh Sharif’s residence, where the two former presidents are currently holding a closed-door meeting.
The meeting comes amid heightened political tensions in Somalia and growing discussions between opposition figures and the federal government over the country’s political and electoral future. Somalia has faced continuing disagreements over constitutional changes and the timing and framework of future elections.
The two former presidents have previously been involved in political consultations concerning Somalia’s national political situation, including discussions involving opposition groups and efforts to reach political agreements.
