Heavy Military Movement Reported in Baidoa as Security Tensions Rise

0

BAIDOA: A significant military presence and increased movement of security forces have been reported across Baidoa town, the administrative capital of Somalia’s South West State, amid heightened political and security tensions in the city.

Residents said they had observed increased numbers of soldiers, military vehicles and security personnel moving through several parts of Baidoa. Security forces have also reportedly strengthened their presence around key government and strategic locations.

The exact reason for the latest military movements remains unclear, and authorities have not yet issued an official statement explaining the deployment.

The developments come days after Baidoa witnessed intense clashes involving Somali federal forces and armed groups associated with former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen. Federal authorities said their forces regained control of the city following the fighting.

According to hospital officials cited by the Associated Press, at least four civilians were killed and 98 others wounded during the recent clashes. However, casualty figures reported by the opposing sides remain disputed.

The security situation around Baidoa has also been affected by ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab, which remains active in parts of South West State. South West authorities recently reported operations against suspected Al-Shabaab positions outside the city, although details of the reported casualties could not be independently verified.

The latest military movements are being closely monitored as political tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and South West State authorities remain elevated.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected.
