ADDIS ABABA — African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods that have struck Nepal, describing the loss of life and destruction as tragic.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Youssouf conveyed condolences on behalf of the African Union Commission to the Government and people of Nepal, as well as to families who lost loved ones in the disaster.
The floods have caused extensive destruction across parts of Nepal, with homes, roads and bridges damaged or swept away. Rescue teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations in areas affected by the disaster. Recent reports indicate that hundreds of people have been killed or remain missing, although casualty figures continue to change as authorities recover victims and receive information from remote areas.
The disaster was linked to a major ice and rock avalanche/glacial collapse in the Himalayan region, which sent enormous volumes of water, mud and debris into river valleys and communities. The flooding also affected areas near the Nepal-Tibet border and disrupted important infrastructure and transportation routes.
Emergency teams, including Nepalese security forces and rescue personnel, are working to reach isolated communities, evacuate survivors and locate missing people. Damaged roads and bridges have made access to some areas particularly difficult, while authorities remain alert to the possibility of further flooding.
The African Union said it stands in solidarity with Nepal during this difficult period, extending its support to communities affected by the catastrophe.
Youssouf’s message comes as the international community responds to one of the region’s most serious recent natural disasters, with governments and humanitarian organizations monitoring the situation and supporting ongoing relief efforts.
The disaster has also renewed concerns about the growing risks faced by Himalayan communities from extreme weather, glacial instability and climate-related changes in high-mountain environments.
