Beledweyne, Somalia – In a significant step forward for Somalia’s security and stability, government forces along with Ma’aweisaly militia have announced major successes in recent military operations against the extremist group Al-Shabaab. The Somali National Army (SNA), working closely with local community fighters known as Macawiisley, has liberated key areas and eliminated several high-ranking militants.
According to Sheikh Abuukar Moalim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, a surprise operation in the Moqokori district of the Hiiraan region led to the liberation of the village of Gumarre and the defeat of Al-Shabaab fighters attempting to hold the area.
“Today’s early morning operation in Gumarre ended decisively in favor of Somali forces,” said Sheikh Abuukar. “Our troops, together with local partners, inflicted a heavy blow on the enemy and reclaimed full control of the area.”
At least 10 Al-Shabaab militants were killed during the clash, and government forces are continuing efforts to secure the surrounding regions. The success marks a growing momentum in the Somali government’s campaign to eliminate extremist threats and restore peace in affected regions.
In a separate coordinated operation in the Middle Shabelle region, Somali forces targeted known Al-Shabaab hideouts. The offensive led to the deaths of two senior militant leaders, Mohamed Adow and Ali Xabad, both of whom were long considered key threats to local communities.
“These individuals had played leading roles in campaigns of fear and violence in Middle Shabelle,” said Sheikh Abuukar. “Their removal brings a sense of relief to many civilians who have suffered under their command.”
The latest developments are being welcomed by residents in both Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, many of whom are hopeful that sustained efforts by the Somali military and its partners will bring long-term peace and security.
The government has pledged to continue operations to stabilize the liberated regions, provide humanitarian support, and work with local leaders to restore normal life for communities impacted by years of conflict.
