MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has expressed deep sorrow following the death of veteran journalist Mohamed Aweys Muudey, widely known as “Boqorka Bartamaha,” who was reportedly killed in Germany, where he had been living in recent years.
The ministry confirmed Muudey’s death and said the incident took place in Germany. According to information released by the ministry, the veteran journalist was attacked by a man armed with a knife and died following the assault.
The circumstances surrounding the killing, including the identity of the suspected attacker and the possible motive, have not been made public.
Muudey was a longtime member of Somalia’s national media community. He worked in the country’s national media both before and after the collapse of the Somali state, continuing his career through decades of significant political and security changes.
His lengthy career made him a well-known figure among Somali journalists and media professionals, particularly those who worked in national broadcasting during different periods of Somalia’s modern history.
Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdulfatah Qasim Mahmoud, conveyed his condolences to Muudey’s family, relatives, friends and colleagues.
Deputy Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Omar Al-Adala, Director General Abdullahi Hayir Duale, department directors and other ministry staff also expressed their condolences, describing Muudey’s death as a loss to Somalia’s national media community.
Minister Abdulfatah Qasim prayed that Allah would grant the late journalist Jannatul Firdaowsa and asked Allah to grant patience and faith to his family, relatives, colleagues in the media sector and the Somali people.
The death has prompted mourning among members of Somalia’s journalism community, where Muudey was remembered for his long service to national media.
Details surrounding the attack remain limited, and the circumstances of the killing are expected to become clearer as German authorities investigate the incident.
