MOGADISHU — Somalia’s growing engagement with Türkiye, Gulf states and Western countries should be assessed primarily by whether these partnerships advance the country’s national interests, according to an opinion article by Ismail Osman published by TRT Afrika.
The article argues that the central question for Somalia should not simply be which foreign powers the country works with, but whether their involvement contributes to Somalia’s security, economic development, stronger institutions and long-term self-reliance.
Türkiye is highlighted as an important example of Somalia’s expanding international partnerships, with cooperation covering areas including military training, security, infrastructure, education and institutional development.
The article also points to Somalia’s emerging energy sector as a potential source of future economic opportunities. It argues that responsible development of natural resources could help generate revenues for infrastructure, healthcare, education and other national priorities.
According to the author, foreign assistance and investment should ultimately strengthen Somalia’s ability to manage its own affairs rather than create long-term dependence.
The article further emphasizes that Somalia can maintain relationships with different international partners while focusing on a clear national strategy and protecting its sovereignty and interests.
“Instead of questioning whether or not Somalia should be working with Türkiye, Gulf States, and Western Countries,” the article argues, “the question should be whether these countries are helping to further the national interests of Somalia.”
The opinion comes as Somalia continues to expand its diplomatic, security and economic relationships with international partners while seeking to strengthen state institutions and improve national security.
