MOGADISHU — Sultan Abdijamal Mohamed Ali has called on Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to uphold justice, constitutional principles and national unity, stressing that public office is a responsibility entrusted to the people rather than a source of personal power.
In a statement, Sultan Abdijamal said the president is expected to serve all citizens equally and govern in accordance with the Constitution, the law and the principles of good governance.
He urged the president to avoid favoritism, discrimination, clan-based divisions and abuse of power, warning that actions perceived as unfair could undermine public confidence and national cohesion.
“Leadership is not only the authority to make decisions; it also means taking responsibility for those decisions and being accountable when citizens raise questions or concerns,” he said.
Sultan Abdijamal said any allegations or concerns regarding violations of the law, the Constitution or principles of justice should be addressed through lawful, peaceful and transparent processes while respecting constitutional institutions and citizens’ rights.
He also called on political actors to ensure that political disagreements do not escalate into confrontation that could deepen social divisions or create instability.
According to the statement, Somalia’s national interest requires political leaders to maintain dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect while seeking peaceful solutions to political disputes.
Sultan Abdijamal further urged the president to listen to different views and concerns from citizens, politicians, traditional leaders, religious scholars, intellectuals and civil society organizations.
He said effective governance cannot be based solely on the views of one individual or political group, but should rely on the rule of law, strong institutions, accountability and public participation.
“Justice is the foundation of public trust,” he said, adding that public confidence in state institutions depends in part on whether citizens believe the law is applied fairly and equally.
The Sultan also stressed that state power should be used to protect the public interest, national security, citizens’ rights and national unity rather than for private interests or to suppress differing political views.
He urged the president to consider the long-term impact of government decisions, saying political leaders are ultimately remembered for how they treated citizens, respected the law and contributed to peace, unity and national development.
Sultan Abdijamal called on President Hassan Sheikh to prioritize the Constitution, justice, social cohesion, peace and the national interest while avoiding actions that could further deepen political divisions or weaken public trust.
He concluded by emphasizing that public office is a trust, power is a responsibility, and the law should stand above individuals, positions and institutions.
He also called on Somalia’s political leaders and stakeholders to protect peace, unity and social cohesion and to resolve political disagreements through dialogue, constitutional processes and the rule of law, with the national interest placed above narrow or private interests.
