AMHARA — An armed alliance operating in Ethiopia’s Amhara region has claimed that its forces captured a number of Ethiopian military personnel following heavy clashes with government forces.
According to a statement circulated by Sahal TV, the alliance said it had released images showing prisoners allegedly captured during fighting that took place on Monday in parts of the Amhara region.
The group claimed that its forces inflicted significant losses on Ethiopian federal troops during the fighting and subsequently launched a counterattack against government positions.
The claims could not be independently verified, and no immediate confirmation from the Ethiopian government or the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) was identified regarding the reported prisoners or the scale of casualties.
Fighting between Fano forces and Ethiopian government troops has continued across parts of Amhara, with both sides regularly making competing claims about military gains and losses. Independent assessments have noted that verification of battlefield claims in the region remains difficult because access to conflict-affected areas is limited.
The latest developments come amid a broader escalation in Ethiopia, where several opposition and armed groups have recently coordinated under the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival. The alliance includes the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Liberation Army and other groups.
The renewed fighting has raised concerns about a wider escalation of Ethiopia’s internal conflicts, particularly as clashes have spread across northern regions and former rival groups have increasingly coordinated against the federal government.
Further details on the reported clashes and the alleged prisoners are expected to emerge as information from the battlefield becomes available.
