MOGADISHU — The Somali government is reportedly continuing to deploy troops and military equipment around areas near the residences of opposition leaders, amid heightened security measures in the capital.
According to local reports, large numbers of troops and military vehicles were moved into the heavily secured perimeter of Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu around midnight last night.
Roads and narrow streets leading from the Buulo Xuubey and Zoobe areas toward the residences of former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire were also reportedly closed.
Photographs shared by residents of the Zoobe area appear to show government security forces blocking access to commercial areas and warning civilians against using streets near the opposition leaders’ homes.
The reported deployments and road closures have raised concerns among residents and opposition supporters about restrictions on movement and the growing security presence around the homes of prominent political figures.
Further details regarding the reasons for the deployments and any official government response have yet to be confirmed.
