Somalia: Speculation Grows Over Possible Return of General Indha-Qarshe as Army Chief

0

MOGADISHU — Speculation is growing over whether senior military officer General Dahir Adan Elmi, widely known as Indha-Qarshe, could return to lead the Somali National Army following reports that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant General.

However, as of October 18, 2026, no official announcement has confirmed his reappointment as Commander of the Somali National Army.

The reports have drawn renewed attention to Indha-Qarshe’s military career and his previous service as the country’s army chief. He has held the position during earlier periods, earning recognition as a veteran of Somalia’s military leadership.

Promotion Fuels Speculation About Military Leadership

The reported promotion has prompted questions about whether the government may be considering changes to the military leadership or whether the decision is intended to recognize the general’s long service.

However, a military promotion does not automatically mean an officer has been appointed to a command position. Claims that Indha-Qarshe is set to return as army chief should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless supported by an official government announcement.

Indha-Qarshe’s Military Background

General Dahir Adan Elmi, known as Indha-Qarshe, is a veteran military officer who reportedly joined the Somali armed forces in 1968. Throughout his career, he has held senior military positions and received military training in Somalia and abroad.

He previously served as Commander of the Somali National Army in 2013 and again in 2018. His experience in senior military leadership has contributed to renewed public interest in the possibility of his return to the position.

Current Army Leadership

The Somali government approved the appointment of General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud as Commander of the Somali National Army in January 2026. He succeeded Major General Odawaa Yusuf Rage following a formal transfer of command in February.

Any potential appointment of Indha-Qarshe would therefore represent a significant development in the country’s military leadership and would require formal confirmation from the relevant authorities.

Official Confirmation Still Needed

It remains unclear whether the Somali government is actively considering Indha-Qarshe for the position or whether the reports reflect speculation surrounding his reported promotion.

An official statement from the presidency, Ministry of Defence or Council of Ministers would be needed to confirm whether a change in army leadership is planned.

For now, the reported promotion and the possibility of his return as army chief should be treated as separate matters. No confirmed announcement has established that General Dahir Adan Elmi, known as Indha-Qarshe, has been reappointed to lead the Somali National Army.
