MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has defended his administration’s approach to political disagreements and law enforcement, declaring that no individual is being detained for political reasons despite growing criticism of his government’s actions.
Speaking about the political situation in the country, President Hassan Sheikh said his administration had exercised considerable restraint, arguing that several individuals could have faced legal action if the government had strictly enforced the law.
“No one is being detained for political reasons. There are many people who would have been arrested if the law were followed. My government has shown restraint, and I hope reason will prevail,” the president said.
His remarks come at a time of heightened political tensions in Somalia, with disagreements between the Federal Government and opposition figures continuing over governance, constitutional matters and the country’s political future.
The president’s statement suggests that his administration considers its handling of political disputes an exercise in restraint, rather than an attempt to suppress opposing voices.
However, his comments are likely to attract further reactions from opposition politicians and other stakeholders, particularly regarding the distinction between legitimate law enforcement and political disagreements.
The issue of equal application of the law remains central to Somalia’s political debate, with questions surrounding whether government institutions are operating independently and whether all citizens and political actors are treated equally under the Constitution.
President Hassan Sheikh’s remarks also place renewed attention on the government’s responsibility to balance national stability, political freedoms and legal accountability.
As political divisions continue, the question remains whether the government and its opponents can resolve their differences through dialogue, constitutional procedures and respect for democratic principles.
The president concluded his remarks by expressing hope that political actors would return to reason, signalling his preference for restraint amid the country’s continuing political disagreements.
