Former Somali PM Abdi Farah Shirdon Speaks Out on Somalia’s Growing Political Divisions

MOGADISHU — Former Somali Prime Minister and presidential candidate Abdi Farah Shirdon Saacid has addressed Somalia’s worsening political situation, delivering a message highlighting what he believes are the underlying causes of the country’s growing divisions and political mistrust.

Shirdon said Somalia’s current divisions are not primarily caused by hatred of national unity, opposition to the government, or hostility between communities. Instead, he argued that the crisis stems from concerns over the implementation of the Constitution, failure to honour political agreements, and widespread mistrust rooted in clan-based politics.

In his statement, Shirdon said:

“What is dividing Somalia today, and causing it to become increasingly fragmented, is not hatred of unity, hatred of government, or hatred between communities. Rather, it is resentment and concern over the implementation of the Constitution and previously agreed commitments, alongside widespread mistrust rooted in clan divisions.”

His remarks highlight longstanding concerns surrounding constitutional governance, political consensus, institutional trust, and the relationship between Somalia’s federal government and other political stakeholders.

The former prime minister’s message comes amid continuing political disagreements over governance, constitutional changes, power-sharing arrangements, and the country’s political future.

Shirdon’s statement places particular emphasis on the importance of respecting the Constitution and honouring agreements as essential elements in rebuilding political confidence and strengthening national unity.
