Kampala(Horn Africa News) — The African Union (AU) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Somalia by announcing an additional $10 million contribution to the emergency reserve fund dedicated to the new peace support mission, AUSSOM (the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia).

In a meeting focused on the situation in Somalia and the progress of the AUSSOM mission, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) confirmed its determination to assist Somalia in its fight against Al-Shabaab and in efforts to establish lasting peace and stability across the country.

The PSC revealed that this latest financial pledge brings the total funding allocated for AUSSOM in 2025 to $20 million, doubling the initial contribution announced earlier this year. This funding aims to bolster operations aimed at countering terrorism, securing key areas, and supporting Somali security forces.

Furthermore, the Council called on the United Nations, European Union, United Kingdom, and other international partners to support a donor conference intended to mobilize further financial backing for AUSSOM. The goal is to secure sustainable funding that will enable the continuation of peacekeeping and stabilization operations in Somalia.

The Council also expressed deep concern over the security situation in Somalia, particularly the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab. It urged Somali security forces to intensify their counter-terrorism efforts and emphasized the importance of sustained international support in helping Somalia overcome these security challenges.

In addition, the AU encouraged all Somali federal member states, including Jubaland and Puntland, to actively engage in an inclusive political dialogue aimed at promoting national unity and reconciliation. The Council praised the Federal Government of Somalia for its ongoing efforts to accelerate national priorities and reforms.

Looking ahead, the African Union announced that in the coming weeks it will submit a comprehensive report to the United Nations Security Council detailing AUSSOM’s newly established bases, logistical requirements, and aviation needs necessary to sustain operations in Somalia.
