In a military operation conducted earlier today, the Somali National Army (SNA) launched a surprise assault on a base operated by the extremist group Al-Shabaab. The target was located on the outskirts of Kurtun, a settlement in Somalia’s Bay region.
Military officials confirmed that the operation inflicted heavy losses on the militants, describing the outcome as a decisive blow against the group. In addition to neutralizing several fighters, the army successfully recovered a large cache of weapons and military equipment that had been in Al-Shabaab’s possession.
The raid was part of the SNA’s ongoing campaign to eliminate Al-Shabaab’s presence across Somalia and reclaim areas still under the control of the armed group. Al-Shabaab, commonly referred to by government forces as “Khawaarij”—a term used to label extremist outcasts—continues to pose a threat in parts of southern and central Somalia.
“This successful mission demonstrates the continued strength and resilience of our national forces,” said a military spokesperson. “We remain committed to liberating our country from the grip of terror.”
Government and military leaders have repeatedly pledged to maintain pressure on Al-Shabaab as part of a nationwide strategy to restore peace and security. Over the past year, joint operations between the SNA and local community fighters, supported by international partners, have led to the liberation of several key towns and villages.
Today’s operation in the Bay region underscores the government’s determination to intensify military pressure and dismantle the group’s operational infrastructure.
