The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, under the leadership of President Mustafe Muhumed Omar (widely known as Mustafe Cagjar), has once again underscored its steadfast support for the people of Hiiraan in their continuing resistance against the extremist group Al-Shabaab.
This latest show of solidarity highlights the enduring relationship between the Somali Region of Ethiopia and the communities of Hiiraan, particularly the grassroots militias known as the Ma’awisley, who are leading the fight to reclaim their territories from militant control.
“This is not just political support,” said one Hiiraan elder to Horn Africa News. “It is brotherhood in action—consistent, and deeply appreciated.”
According to community leaders and residents, the support from Ethiopia’s Somali Region has been both sustained and strategic:
- In 2022, the region delivered vehicles mounted with weapons, rifles, ammunition, food supplies, fuel, and ambulances to support wounded fighters.
- In 2024, they renewed their assistance with additional ammunition and fuel.
- Most recently, a larger consignment of military and logistical support has arrived, reinforcing the local resistance efforts on the frontlines.
Hiiraan’s politicians and elders expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing that such acts of solidarity would never be forgotten:
“The Somali Regional State, the Ogaden community, and President Mustafe Cagjar have stood with us at our most difficult moments,” one elder remarked. “We pledge that this bond will be honored. We will remain your protective shield against any threats originating from our territory.”
The statement concluded with an emotional message:
“Your sacrifices are seen. Your solidarity is felt. You are not just our neighbors—you are our brothers.”
This deepening regional partnership underscores a growing trend of grassroots cooperation across borders in the Horn of Africa, with local leadership playing an increasingly critical role in the collective effort to stabilize central Somalia and counter extremist threats.
