Federal government troops and local militias have launched a large-scale mobilization effort in the Mahaas district of Hiiraan, aiming to retake control of the nearby town of Moqokori, which was seized by al-Shabab militants just two days ago following intense clashes.

The loss of Moqokori marks a serious setback—it is the first time in three years that the town has fallen back into the hands of the extremist group. The development has triggered a swift and coordinated response from Somali authorities and regional allies.
Joint Operation Underway
The counteroffensive is being organized under the joint leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia and the powerful Ma’awisley militia, a community defense force made up of local fighters. The militia is being led by renowned commander Ali Jeyte Osman, who has previously played a critical role in anti-al-Shabab campaigns across Hiiraan.
Senior government officials, clan elders, and community leaders have gathered in Mahaas to plan the operation and unify efforts. According to sources on the ground, there is a growing sense of urgency to act swiftly before al-Shabab consolidates its hold on Moqokori.
“This is not just about territory,” said one local elder. “Moqokori is a strategic lifeline. We cannot afford to lose it.”
Internal Divisions and Urgent Mediation
In recent hours, intensive meetings have been held involving key members of the Hawadle clan, which has deep roots in both Mahaas and Moqokori. The talks are aimed at resolving internal disputes within the local leadership of Moqokori—divisions which some believe contributed to the town’s recent fall.
Community leaders underscored that unity among political and clan factions is essential to reclaiming and holding the area.
“Al-Shabab exploits division,” said a local militia coordinator. “If we are not united, we are vulnerable.”
Why Moqokori Matters
Moqokori is considered a strategic stronghold due to its proximity to the borders of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions. The town connects nearly 10 critical roadways, linking the central Somali regions of Hiiraan, Galgaduud, and Middle Shabelle. Whoever controls Moqokori wields considerable influence over movement, trade, and military logistics in central Somalia.
The town’s capture by al-Shabab poses not only a military risk but also threatens to disrupt local economies and humanitarian access in the region.
Building Toward a Counteroffensive
Military units and Ma’awisley fighters are currently preparing for a counterattack. Coordination between federal and local forces is ongoing, with efforts focused on intelligence sharing, logistics, and ensuring the broad support of the civilian population.
Officials in Mahaas have expressed confidence that the operation will succeed.
“This is a fight for our land, our families, and our future,” said one senior official in Mahaas. “We are determined to take Moqokori back—and keep it.”
The next few days will be decisive for the future of Moqokori and for the broader battle against al-Shabab in central Somalia.
