The Cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia, during its regular weekly meeting held today in Mogadishu, approved the formation of the National Higher Education Committee, a move widely seen as a major step toward improving the quality and oversight of the country’s tertiary education sector.

The newly appointed committee, submitted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education, comprises 15 distinguished Somali scholars and professionals with proven expertise in education, administration, and institutional development. The selection process was described as transparent and based on merit and fairness.
The primary role of the committee will be to guide policy development, advise the government on higher education reform, and ensure the growth and quality of universities and tertiary institutions across the country.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who underscored the importance of institutional reforms in education and other sectors to align Somalia’s public services with national priorities and constitutional mandates.
In addition to the committee’s approval, the Cabinet also reviewed key structural reforms within government institutions and discussed legislative alignment in line with Somalia’s federal framework.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments was praised for its effective coordination of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, with Somalia being recognized among the countries that successfully managed Hajj services for their pilgrims.
The establishment of the National Higher Education Committee marks a new chapter for Somalia’s academic sector, aiming to rebuild credibility, improve academic standards, and restore confidence in the country’s educational future.
