KHARTOUM: Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil El-Tayib Idris has issued a directive for the immediate reopening of all universities in the capital, Khartoum, as part of a broader initiative to revive the country’s war-torn education sector, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

The order instructs the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to coordinate efforts to reopen the institutions, many of which were damaged or destroyed during the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023. The ministry has also been tasked with conducting urgent assessments and initiating repair work on university campuses and research centres that have suffered extensive structural damage.

In addition, the prime minister has called on the National Centre for Curricula and Educational Research to revise the national curriculum to include educational content promoting national unity and countering hate speech — a move seen as a step toward healing social divisions deepened by the war.

While no exact timeline has been announced for the reopening, officials say the initiative marks a significant milestone in the country’s long-term recovery and rebuilding strategy.
