Mogadishu-The Federal Government of Somalia has announced plans to deliver emergency assistance to parts of the Awdal region, located in the far northwestern corner of the country, where a severe drought has taken hold.
During a cabinet meeting, Somali federal ministers heard distressing reports from officials hailing from Awdal, detailing the worsening humanitarian crisis affecting both people and livestock. The government emphasized the need to swiftly dispatch urgent relief to the affected areas.
Youth volunteers who visited the drought-impacted communities described witnessing heartbreaking scenes. They reported that both human and animal lives are at risk as water and fodder supplies have dwindled to critical levels.
While it remains unclear how the Somali government plans to deliver aid to Awdal—given that the region is currently under the control of Somaliland—there are reports suggesting that the assistance may be routed through neighboring Djibouti.
The situation continues to unfold as communities in Awdal struggle for survival amid worsening drought conditions.
