Mogadishu – The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has strongly condemned the seizure and alleged mistreatment of the cargo ship SEA WORLD, which was flying the flag of the Comoros Islands and heading toward the Port of Mogadishu. In an official press release, the FGS described the incident as a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and constitution.

The vessel, which was intercepted by forces affiliated with the Puntland regional administration, was reportedly carrying legal military equipment destined for the TÜRKSOM military training facility in Mogadishu.

The Somali Federal Government emphasized that the seizure of the ship constitutes a breach of both national and international laws, specifically citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS – 1982). The action was labeled as an act of piracy and deemed illegal.

In its statement, the Somali Federal Government:
1. Demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the SEA WORLD vessel, highlighting that it was transporting legitimate cargo intended for national defense purposes.
2. Warned the Puntland administration against continuing such illegal maritime operations in waters under its jurisdiction and called for full cooperation and respect for the authority of the central government.
3. Reaffirmed its commitment to combatting piracy and holding accountable those involved in acts that threaten maritime security in Somali waters.

The Federal Government concluded by urging all federal member states to respect their constitutional responsibilities regarding the protection and management of the country’s maritime resources. It also cautioned against any unauthorized interference that could jeopardize national and regional security.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions between the central government and regional authorities, underlining the ongoing challenges in asserting federal authority over Somali territorial waters.
