Mogadishu – The Federal Republic of Somalia has warmly welcomed France’s historic declaration announcing its decision to formally recognize the State of Palestine. The Somali government hailed the move as a courageous and principled stand that strengthens international efforts to achieve justice, peace, and stability in the Middle East.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Somalia described France’s announcement as a “significant and timely step that affirms the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination, sovereignty, and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
“This is a bold and timely decision,” the Ministry stated. “It reflects the increasing international consensus in support of a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and affirms the legitimacy of the Palestinian struggle for statehood. Somalia stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people and commends France for taking this courageous stance.”
The Somali government reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, a position deeply rooted in decades of diplomatic and moral commitment. Somalia reaffirmed that its position is aligned with numerous resolutions of the United Nations, the principles of international humanitarian law, and the global aspiration for a just and lasting peace in the region.
“Somalia has consistently supported the two-state solution as the only viable path toward achieving peace and coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples,” the statement continued. “We believe that the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state is an essential step toward ensuring justice and restoring the dignity and rights of millions of Palestinians.”
France’s decision to recognize Palestine comes at a pivotal moment, amid increasing international pressure for a renewed push toward peace and accountability. It follows similar actions taken by other nations in recent years, reflecting a growing global consensus that a fair and durable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be grounded in mutual recognition, respect for international law, and the protection of human rights.
Somalia also called upon other countries, particularly within the European Union and the broader international community, to follow France’s example and take concrete steps in support of Palestinian statehood. The Ministry emphasized that such collective action would not only advance the prospects for peace but also send a strong message that the world stands against occupation, injustice, and the violation of human rights.
“Now is the time for the international community to act decisively,” the statement concluded. “The people of Palestine have waited too long for their right to freedom, dignity, and statehood. Somalia joins France and other nations in reaffirming that peace can only be achieved through recognition, dialogue, and the unwavering pursuit of justice.”
The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to playing a constructive role in regional and international efforts aimed at achieving peace in the Middle East, including through support for all diplomatic initiatives that promote the realization of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine.
