Mogadishu – Traditional elders of the Hawadle clan are currently holding a crucial meeting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, aimed at addressing pressing issues facing the clan and exploring ways to foster unity.

Despite concerns over the lack of strong, outspoken leadership among the current generation of elders, the gathering is seen as a hopeful step toward consensus-building and collective action. One of the key challenges discussed is the ongoing threat from the Al-Shabaab militant group, which has affected many communities, including the Hawadle.

“There isn’t a single Hawadle elder today who can boldly speak up and defend the interests of our people,” said a young Hawadle youth in Mogadishu, who spoke to Horn Africa News on condition of anonymity. “Still, we remain hopeful. We pray that these elders are guided toward wise decisions that reflect the unity and well-being of the entire clan.”

Historically, the Hawadle have had visionary leaders who played significant roles in guiding the community through difficult times.

Many clan members are now looking to the traditional elders to revive that legacy and address internal divisions, while also playing a more active role in the wider national struggle against extremism and insecurity.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the Hawadle clan’s approach to both internal development and national challenges in the months ahead.
