Addis Ababa – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is participating in a high-level African Union summit in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. This gathering brings together African heads of state, particularly members of the AU Peace and Security Council, to address key issues impacting the continent.
The summit’s main agenda focuses on the ongoing political and security crisis in Libya, with African leaders deliberating on sustainable solutions to the protracted conflict in the North African nation.
President Hassan Sheikh is expected to deliver a speech outlining Somalia’s position on regional peace and stability, emphasizing the importance of enhancing African-led efforts to resolve internal conflicts across the continent.
Sources close to the presidential delegation confirmed that President Hassan Sheikh will hold bilateral meetings with several African leaders on the sidelines of the summit. The discussions aim to strengthen diplomatic ties and cooperation in areas such as security, economic development, and political collaboration.
The summit comes at a critical time for both the Horn of Africa and North Africa, regions currently facing complex and evolving challenges. African leaders are calling for greater unity and collective action to achieve lasting peace and security across the continent.
President Hassan’s visit to Ethiopia comes at a time when Ethiopia continues to pursue its ambition of securing sea access through Somali waters — a move that the Federal Government of Somalia has firmly rejected. Despite Somalia’s clear stance that Ethiopia cannot obtain a maritime corridor through its territory, Addis Ababa has not backed down from its demands.
