NEW YORK — During an open debate on maritime security convened by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Somalia underscored the critical importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the foundation for the peaceful and cooperative use of the world’s oceans.
Somalia’s delegation emphasized that adherence to international maritime law is essential for building trust among nations and enabling coordinated, effective action to tackle maritime challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, illicit trafficking, and environmental threats.
“Respect for these laws, while safeguarding national sovereignty, is a vital step toward fostering trust and ensuring the success of joint efforts,” the Somali statement declared.
The debate brought together Security Council member states, UN officials, and maritime experts. Somalia reiterated its commitment to regional and global cooperation to strengthen maritime safety and security.
Home to Africa’s longest coastline, Somalia has faced significant maritime challenges in recent years, particularly piracy and illegal fishing, which have disrupted coastal livelihoods and impacted the national economy.
The Somali government stressed that international cooperation and compliance with UNCLOS are key to protecting marine resources, advancing the blue economy, and promoting peace across the Horn of Africa.
