MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced fresh plans to launch a decisive military offensive aimed at clearing Al-Shabaab militants from several key districts, in what it describes as an imminent and significant victory for the Somali people.

Speaking to the media, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Sheikh Abuukar Mohamed, said government forces were in a state of high readiness and intensive mobilisation to confront the militant group.

“In the coming days, the Somali people will hear news that will bring them joy — that Al-Shabaab has been expelled from important towns and districts,” said the Defence Ministry spokesperson.

According to Sheikh Abuukar, preparations for the new offensive are concentrated in the regions of Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle, and Galgaduud — areas that have long been Al-Shabaab strongholds.

He urged local communities to support and participate in the operations, stressing the importance of joint efforts to reclaim the few remaining areas under militant control.

The government’s renewed pledge comes amid long-standing public frustration over the slow progress of anti-Al-Shabaab operations. While previous campaigns have seen the liberation of several areas, the government has often faced criticism for political interference, clan-based divisions within the armed forces, and failing to sustain security in liberated territories.

If successful, the upcoming offensive could mark a significant turning point in Somalia’s struggle against the insurgents, potentially boosting public confidence in the government’s ability to restore stability.
