NAIROBI — Ahmed Rashid, a police officer famed for his aggressive crackdown on crime in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighborhood, is facing trial over the fatal shooting of two men on March 31, 2017.

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, ignited a national debate over extrajudicial killings and the accountability of law enforcement officers in Kenya.

Critics have long accused the police of heavy-handed tactics in the crime-prone Eastleigh area, making this trial a high-profile case.

During proceedings, a ballistic expert told the court that the bullets recovered from the scene could not be conclusively linked to the pistols presented for testing.

While the bullets bore markings consistent with a PA2 model pistol, the expert explained that the projectiles had been deformed upon impact with a hard surface, making definitive identification impossible.

A total of seven bullets and four fragments were analyzed, but the expert was unable to determine the exact number of firearms used in the shooting.

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence, with the outcome closely watched by both legal experts and the public concerned about police conduct in Nairobi.
