MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the completion of military training for Egyptian troops who will soon be deployed to join the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the Ministry of Defence announced on Monday.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that Egypt had completed the first round of training for units of its armed forces earmarked for deployment in Somalia. The troops are expected to arrive in the coming weeks and will take part in joint operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab.
“The Ministry of Defence warmly welcomes the successful conclusion of the initial training program for Egyptian Armed Forces units, who will soon join the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM),” the statement read.
The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) had earlier approved Egypt’s participation in AUSSOM, marking a significant expansion of the mission’s multinational presence.
The Somali government said the deployment reflects Egypt’s strong commitment to supporting Somalia’s security and strengthening the capacity of the Somali National Army (SNA).
“This step demonstrates Egypt’s firm dedication to Somalia’s stability and to building the capabilities of our armed forces through the new framework of AUSSOM,” the Ministry noted.
Somalia also praised the African Union and international partners for their continued role in strengthening the country’s security institutions and accelerating the fight against extremist groups.
“We also commend the crucial role of our African and international partners in speeding up the fight to eliminate the Khawarij terrorist groups, including Al-Shabaab and Daesh,” the statement added.
According to government sources, the Egyptian contingent will be stationed in key conflict-affected regions, including Hiiraan, Lower Shabelle, and Gedo, where Al-Shabaab remains active.
The arrival of Egyptian forces marks a new chapter in regional support for Somalia’s ongoing battle against terrorism, as Mogadishu and its allies push toward securing long-term peace and stability.
