MOGADISHU – Following former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi’s remarks yesterday regarding the failed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ethiopia, which he said was influenced by pressure from the Arab League led by Egypt, Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia, Suleiman Dedefo, has publicly criticized the organization. He claimed that Egypt uses the Arab League to target Ethiopia, while the League itself achieves little else.

In a statement posted on his X account, Ambassador Dedefo wrote:

“Is the Arab League truly a body that unites Arab countries, or is it an organization serving Egypt’s policy against Ethiopia? Why does it remain silent on the issues facing member states, many of which are experiencing instability, insecurity, displacement, famine, and conflict?

Why does the Arab League consistently focus on Ethiopia’s water utilization plans, while ignoring numerous pressing issues affecting its member states? What legal or moral authority do they have to threaten Ethiopia and dictate how it uses its own resources?

The League has severely failed, demonstrating that it does not genuinely represent the majority of Arab nations.”

Since his appointment as ambassador to Somalia, Dedefo has faced strong criticism from Somali citizens, who accuse him of making offensive statements and promoting division within the country. While stationed in Mogadishu, he has already sparked two major controversies.

Political analysts and scholars are now closely watching the Somali federal government’s response to Ambassador Dedefo’s remarks, as many view his conduct as a breach of diplomatic norms.
