MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungaab, has issued a strong directive and warning against opposition-announced demonstrations, declaring that any individual — whether a former president or a political leader — who attempts to organize or participate in unauthorized protests will be arrested.

In a statement described as both unexpected and hardline, Mayor Mungaab said: “Whether you are a former president or a serving official, if you organize a protest, you will be taken to prison.”

The order comes amid rising political tensions in Somalia, with opposition groups recently announcing plans to stage mass demonstrations against the government. The protests are said to be fueled by growing concerns over governance, political freedoms, and allegations of mismanagement.

Mungaab’s declaration signals the government’s determination to curb public dissent and prevent large-scale opposition rallies in the capital. Critics, however, argue that such measures infringe on constitutional rights to free expression and assembly, further deepening the rift between the government and opposition.

The unexpected decision is likely to intensify political debate in Mogadishu and could set the stage for confrontations if the opposition proceeds with its protest plans despite the warning.
