ADDIS ABABA (HAN) – Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, has reiterated his country’s unwavering commitment to supporting peace and stability in Somalia during the High-Level Pledging Conference for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

Ambassador Hadera highlighted Ethiopia’s role in countering terrorism, noting significant progress in weakening the capabilities of Al-Shabaab.

“We have made tangible achievements in reducing Al-Shabaab’s power. In this regard, I would like to pay tribute to our troops, especially those who sacrificed their lives in this national mission,” he said.

However, the ambassador cautioned that the extremist group remains a global threat that requires joint international cooperation and decisive collective action. He also praised the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense and national security institutions.

Ambassador Hadera further stressed the urgent financial needs of AUSSOM, which requires nearly $180 million for 2025, urging international partners to scale up contributions and implement UN Security Council Resolution 2719 to secure sustainable funding.

He underscored that building the capacity of Somalia’s national security forces is the most sustainable pathway to lasting stability. He called for renewed political will and integrated support to help Somalia achieve lasting peace and prosperity.
