MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a keynote address today at the opening of the seventh session of the Federal Parliament, strongly emphasizing the government’s commitment to holding “one person, one vote” elections, which he described as the true aspiration of the Somali people.
The President stated clearly that opponents of universal suffrage elections will not be able to stand in the way of the people’s will. He pointed to the millions of Somalis who have already registered to vote as proof of the nation’s readiness for direct democratic participation.
“If there are those opposing the holding of one person, one vote elections, the evidence will be the millions who have registered, showing their desire to cast their ballots,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared.
He further described voter registration as a historic milestone, demonstrating that Somalis are prepared to move beyond past systems based on power-sharing arrangements and the selection of delegates by clan elders.
“Our people are ready for their vote, and they want to participate directly in elections. No one has the power to stop the will of the people,” the President reaffirmed.
Finally, President Hassan Sheikh called on political leaders to unite their efforts toward ensuring free and fair elections, stressing that such a process is central to building a complete state structure and restoring public trust in government institutions.
