DOHA, (HAN) — The Government of Qatar has reaffirmed the importance of providing sustained technical and institutional support to Somalia in order to strengthen the country’s human rights framework and enable it to meet both national and international obligations. The statement comes amid ongoing efforts by Somalia to rebuild its governance institutions and address longstanding humanitarian challenges.
Jassim Ibrahim Al Malki, Third Secretary of Qatar’s Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks during a session in which Somali officials presented the progress made in advancing human rights in the country. Key initiatives highlighted included the establishment of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, a body aimed at monitoring and promoting human rights protections throughout Somalia.
Al Malki acknowledged that Somalia continues to face multiple challenges that affect its political stability, security, and economic growth. “These challenges require the international community to act in a coordinated manner, supporting Somalia’s national human rights mechanisms and ensuring that obligations under international law are met,” he said.
In addition to governance issues, Al Malki emphasized the humanitarian crises affecting Somalia. The country is currently grappling with severe drought, widespread food insecurity, and significant internal displacement. He called for an integrated international response that combines immediate emergency relief with long-term development strategies aimed at strengthening community resilience and reducing dependency on external aid.
Al Malki reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to providing ongoing humanitarian, relief, and development support, working closely with the United Nations and other international partners. He stressed that Qatar is dedicated to continuous engagement with Somalia, aiming to promote both human rights and sustainable development in the country.
The announcement reflects Qatar’s broader foreign policy priorities in the region, highlighting Doha’s role as a key partner in supporting post-conflict reconstruction, human rights advancement, and humanitarian assistance in East Africa.
