MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has rejected claims that the country is plagued by social divisions, insisting that disputes in Somalia are confined to political leaders rather than society at large.
Speaking during Friday prayers at the Presidential Mosque, President Mohamud underscored that Somalia is not torn apart by clan or religious fault lines but by persistent rivalries among political figures.
“The real essence of politics is not speaking behind closed doors. Somali politicians must present clear positions that can guide the rebuilding and governance of the country,” the president said.
He criticized politicians who oppose government policies without offering alternatives, stressing the need for clarity in political discourse.
“We have leaders and politicians who are against what is known, but they do not say what they actually want. This is a problem. To our brothers engaged in politics, I say: clarify your political stance,” he added.
The president also touched on pressing national issues, including the protection of public land, strengthening security, and the ongoing constitutional review process. He reaffirmed that the government’s political vision remains clear and consistent.
His remarks come as Somalia continues to grapple with political wrangling that frequently hampers state-building efforts. President Mohamud emphasized that these disputes are limited to the political elite and do not mirror divisions within Somali society.
