CEERGAABO, (HAN) — Large-scale protests broke out last night in Ceergaabo, the capital of Somalia’s Sanaag region, as residents expressed outrage over the killing of a local youth by Somaliland security forces. Demonstrators blocked major roads across the city, setting tires ablaze to voice their anger at the fatal shooting that occurred recently in the area, which they blame on Somaliland troops.

Eyewitnesses reported that Somaliland forces responded to the protests with live gunfire, resulting in the death of a young man identified as Xamse, a well-known figure among Ceergaabo’s youth.

Several protesters spoke emotionally about the incident, vowing to continue demonstrations until those responsible for the initial killing are held accountable. “We will not stop protesting until Somaliland hands over those who killed our people and justice is served,” one protester said.

The unrest reflects escalating tensions between local communities and Somaliland authorities in the contested Sanaag region, where political and security disputes remain unresolved.
