NAIROBI, (HAN) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the state funeral of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga on Thursday, joining regional leaders, foreign dignitaries, and thousands of mourners in Nairobi to pay tribute to the late Kenyan political icon.
The funeral was held at Nyayo Stadium, one of Kenya’s largest venues, reflecting the immense national and regional respect for Odinga. The former prime minister passed away on October 15 at the age of 80, after decades of active involvement in Kenyan politics, social advocacy, and continental initiatives.
Odinga’s life was marked by a steadfast commitment to democracy, social justice, and Pan-African ideals. He played a pivotal role in Kenya’s transition to multi-party democracy in the early 1990s and was a key figure in promoting political reforms, electoral transparency, and civic participation throughout his career.
President Mohamud’s presence highlighted the close diplomatic and political ties between Somalia and Kenya, as well as the regional influence Odinga held beyond Kenya’s borders. In a statement released after Odinga’s passing, Mohamud described him as “a towering statesman whose legacy will endure,” praising his lifelong dedication to public service and governance reforms.
The funeral brought together regional heads of state, government officials, and representatives of international organizations, demonstrating the late leader’s stature not only within Kenya but across Africa. Among the attendees were Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and several former African heads of state.
Odinga, son of Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, began his political career in the 1970s. Over the decades, he emerged as a formidable opposition leader, championing human rights, equitable development, and political inclusivity. He also played an active role in Pan-African diplomacy, supporting initiatives to strengthen economic cooperation, peace, and democratic governance across the continent.
The state funeral followed a series of national events honoring Odinga’s contributions, including memorial services, public tributes, and official statements from political parties and civil society groups. He was accorded full state honors, a testament to his lasting impact on Kenya’s political landscape and society at large.
President Mohamud’s attendance not only reflected Somalia’s respect for Odinga but also reinforced the importance of regional cooperation and diplomacy in East Africa, particularly in advancing shared goals such as peace, stability, and democratic governance.
