MOGADISHU, (HAN) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday convened a high-level, closed-door meeting at Villa Somalia with several former opposition leaders, in a bid to ease rising political tensions in South West State.

The meeting included former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, and senior political figure Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the talks focused on the recent political unrest in South West State, including the decision to prevent some opposition members from traveling to Baidoa earlier in the day.

Although no official statement has been released regarding the specifics of the discussions, political insiders suggest that President Hassan Sheikh is seeking to mediate disputes and prevent further escalation in a region that has experienced repeated political friction and local tensions.

Observers note that the participation of prominent former opposition figures signals an effort by the federal government to engage diverse political actors in dialogue. Analysts say this could be a strategic move to foster reconciliation, promote regional stability, and ensure peaceful political processes ahead of upcoming regional developments.

The presidential office has not confirmed any outcomes of the talks, but further statements from the president and the attending officials are expected in the coming days.

Political analysts and local observers are closely monitoring the situation in South West State, noting that the region has long been a flashpoint for political disagreements, often affecting security and governance.
