MOGADISHU — The number of countries allowing Somali passport holders to obtain visa-on-arrival access has risen to at least 25, marking a modest improvement in Somalia’s global mobility, according to new data from Reach Immigration and the Passport Index.

The report indicates that Somali nationals can now obtain entry visas upon arrival in several countries across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean. While these destinations do not offer visa-free travel, the on-arrival option simplifies access for business, education, and humanitarian travel, reflecting growing international confidence in Somalia’s governance and documentation systems.

In recent years, Somalia’s federal government has improved passport security features and expanded its diplomatic relations, which analysts believe have contributed to this positive development.

“This progress reflects Somalia’s reintegration into the international community,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We continue to work toward increasing the number of countries accessible to Somali citizens, especially for education, trade, and tourism.”

Background: For decades, Somali travelers faced significant restrictions due to security concerns and weak passport integrity. The government’s introduction of a biometric e-passport in 2017 and strengthened border management systems have gradually improved global acceptance.

Significance: Greater travel access helps foster people-to-people exchange, expands opportunities for students and entrepreneurs, and enhances Somalia’s participation in international events and regional cooperation.
