DJIBOUTI — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has conferred a Medal of Honour upon the President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, in recognition of his outstanding and long-standing contribution to peace, reconciliation, and stability in Somalia.

The prestigious ceremony was held in Djibouti City, where both leaders reaffirmed the historical friendship and strategic partnership that bind their two nations.

In his address during the ceremony, President Mohamud hailed President Guelleh as “a steadfast friend of Somalia”—a leader who has consistently stood by the Somali people during their most difficult times. He praised Djibouti’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia politically, diplomatically, and militarily, particularly its contribution of peacekeeping troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM ATMIS), now known as AUSSOM.

President Mohamud emphasized that Djibouti’s assistance has gone beyond military support. He highlighted the country’s role in facilitating dialogue and reconciliation, hosting Somali peace conferences, and offering humanitarian aid to Somali communities affected by conflict and displacement.

“Djibouti has always been by our side—when many others turned away. The people and government of Djibouti have proven that they are true brothers to the Somali nation,” said President Mohamud.

In response, President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and described the honour as a reflection of the shared vision between Somalia and Djibouti for a peaceful and prosperous Horn of Africa. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continue supporting Somalia’s path toward lasting peace, development, and institution-building.

“Somalia’s peace is Djibouti’s peace, and its progress is our collective progress. We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Somali brothers and sisters,” said President Guelleh.

The ceremony concluded with both leaders pledging to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as security, trade, education, and regional integration, reinforcing the unity of purpose that has long defined relations between the two neighbouring nations.

This honour symbolizes not only the friendship between President Mohamud and President Guelleh but also the enduring alliance between Somalia and Djibouti, two nations whose shared history, culture, and language continue to underpin their collaboration for peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
