ADDIS ABABA —The African Union (AU) has extended its warm congratulations to Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan following her landslide victory in the country’s recent general election, praising the poll as a demonstration of democratic progress and political stability in the East African nation.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, commended President Suluhu for her “commitment to democratic governance and inclusive leadership,” adding that the AU remains ready to continue its partnership with Tanzania in promoting peace, development, and regional integration.
President Suluhu, who became Tanzania’s first female head of state in 2021 after the passing of President John Magufuli, secured a decisive victory in the vote held last week, according to official results released by the country’s electoral commission. Her ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party also retained a strong parliamentary majority.
The election, however, took place amid protests by opposition groups, who alleged irregularities in the voting process and the arrest of several opposition figures. International observers have called for calm and dialogue, urging all parties to respect the democratic process and the rule of law.
In its statement, the AU urged Tanzania’s political actors to prioritize national unity and work together to strengthen democratic institutions. “Elections should be a moment to consolidate peace and advance the country’s development agenda,” the AU said.
President Suluhu’s victory cements her position as one of Africa’s most prominent female leaders. She is expected to focus her new term on economic growth, job creation, and regional cooperation within the East African Community (EAC).
