ADDIS ABABA — The Ethiopian government has, for the first time, formally acknowledged that Eritrean troops are deployed inside Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, marking a significant shift in its public position regarding the long-running conflict.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ethiopian authorities confirmed that forces from neighbouring Eritrea are “present and active” within parts of northern Ethiopia, particularly in areas under the Tigray regional administration.

“The Eritrean army currently controls and administers a substantial portion of northern Ethiopia,” the government said. “They are providing arms, ammunition and logistical support to the armed groups engaged in fighting against us.”

This is the first official admission from Addis Ababa of direct Eritrean military involvement since tensions and conflict flared in Tigray. For years, Ethiopian officials either downplayed or denied Eritrea’s role, despite widespread reports by international observers and rights organisations.

The government’s acknowledgment comes amid renewed clashes in several districts of Tigray and growing pressure from regional and international partners to clarify the security situation in the area.

Eritrean officials have not yet responded to the latest statement from Ethiopia. However, Asmara has previously rejected accusations of destabilising activities inside Ethiopia, insisting its actions were defensive and aimed at protecting border communities.

Analysts say the admission could reshape diplomatic dynamics in the Horn of Africa, where relations between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and regional administrations remain fragile.
